Mekong Floating Market

On the journey, the lady that was driving our boat brought along a piece of bamboo and proceeded to stip the skin off it and make a selection of flowers and birds out of it whilst driving the boat!

I got the bus to Can Tho with a couple I’d met in Ben Tre and we all decied to stay at the same place again when we got to Can Tho. We got there late and arranged to go out on a boat the following day to see the floating markets that the Mekong Delta’s famous for. After a quiet evening trying to find some bars to have a drink in we resorted to a drink in the park by the river, which was really interesting people watching as loads of people came out in the evening and hung around the park from the teenagers right up to older people, everyone had fun and it was a really chilled atmosphere.

The next morning we got up ridiculously early to get the boat. Firstly we went to the main market a 45 min boat journey away. On the journey, the lady that was driving our boat brought along a piece of bamboo and proceeded to stip the skin off it and make a selection of flowers and birds out of it whilst driving the boat! The journey was interesting, seeing people go about their lives by the river. When we got there there were a variety of boats from the big motorised boats to the small rowing boats all selling different items, mainly fruit and veg.

It was funny watching the boats, they were so laden down with produce I was amazed they didn’t sink being so low in the water. Each boat had a big stick with what they sold tied to it so from afar you could see what each boat had for sale, the bigger boats looked like people lived on them as well. We circled round looking at what people had for sale, and bought some coffee from the drinks boat! It was interesting to see and I was intriged to get to the next market further down which I was told was less touristy and full of smaller boats… That afternoon I got the bus to Rach Gia to head to my final destination of Phu Quoc for a few days chilling out and to see the sea before I headed home!
